Description
We study non-minimal coupling of a massless Higgs field to a higher-derivative theory of gravity. We find that in the Einstein frame the scalar potential is modified and the Higgs receives an effective field-dependent mass parameter such that it is dynamical and scans over a large range (from the Planck scale to almost zero). We compute the one-loop effective potential and we observe that the Higgs field develops a non-zero vacuum expectation value at a value parametrically much smaller than the UV scale. Furthermore, by computing the renormalization group improved effective potential we find that the generated electroweak vacuum is the global minimum of the potential.
