Description
The Centro Nazionale Adronterapia Oncologico (CNAO), as the first hadrontherapy center in Italy has been equipped by a dedicated Dose Delivery System (DDS). It includes the scanning magnets, the beam monitoring system and the passive elements. The DDS main roles are the management of the beam delivery and the online check of the beam intensity and beam position; in fact the treatment feasibility depends mainly on the ability and operations of the DDS in both the right and fault beam situations.
The scanning system of DDS, consists of two power supplies connected to two iden¬tical dipole magnets for horizontal and vertical beam deflections located at the end of the extraction line at distances ranging between 4.7 m and 6.8 m upstream of the isocenter, depending on the line. The CNAO beam lines have been designed to cover a maximum field of 20×20cm2 at the isocenter. Downstream the magnets, a set of monitor chambers are used to measure the beam fluence and position.
