Description
Electrical breakdown sets a limit on the kinetic energy that particles in a conventional radio-frequency accelerator can reach. Therefore, new accelerator concepts must be developed to achieve higher energies and to make future particle accelerators more compact and affordable. High-intensity lasers and their interaction with charged particles in a plasma medium and in vacuum play the central role in the research aimed to developing new generation of accelerators. Higher-order modes of lasers have been the subject of many studies over the past years, e.g., for particle acceleration. In this presentation, some basics of laser-driven accelerators are reviewed at first. An all-optical acceleration scheme of ions by higher-order laser beams with some new results and features is presented. Finally some research topics of plasma-based accelerators in recent years are briefly explained.
