Description
Today, there is a region of the spectrum that is not well served by practical sources. This region is called the terahertz (THz) gap because it lies between the fastest available transistors at around 0.5 THz and the lowest frequency conventional lasers around 30 THz. The lack of sources in this region is not due to a lack of applications for THz light, as there are many materials (including water) that have interesting dielectric properties at THz frequencies. This talk concerns the theory of one compact source of THz radiation, the Smith-Purcell free-electron laser (SPFEL), and the application of THz radiation.
