The high-gradient plasma accelerators will allow the construction of a new generation of more compact electron accelerators. The AWAKE (Advanced proton-driven plasma WAKefield Experiment) facility at CERN is a proof-of-principle experiment of plasma wakefield acceleration using a proton bunch as a driver. The computer simulation plays a crucial role in understanding physics and optimizing experimental parameters. In collaboration with the AWAKE team, I performed computer simulation that is important for AWAKE Run 2 experiment. Warp code framework (a simulation toolkit of the Berkley lab) has been used for the simulation studies. In this talk, a review of plasma accelerators and more especially the AWAKE project is given. The particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation technique and the advanced PIC codes in the world are reviewed. The Warp simulation results are also presented.
