Description
The first stage of many particle accelerators is an ion source, responsible for producing the charged particles and pre-accelerating them to form an ion beam. Ion sources have many applications, not just in the field of scientific studies, but also for medical applications, material processing and surface treatments. In this talk I will explain the physical mechanisms involved in some famous types of ion sources used in accelerator machines. I will also review my past experiences on the research and development of the DC and RF ion sources used in high vacuum coating systems. Finally, I will present preliminary results of the simulation of the magnetic field and the microwave plasma in an electron cyclotron resonance ion source.
